First responders were honored by the Naperville-Aurora Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh (HSS) on August 14th at the Naperville Raksha Bandhan Ceremony. The ceremony was attended by firefighters, police officers, and other public officials of Naperville who have served and protected the community.
A traditional Raksha Bandhan ceremony celebrates the bond between siblings but extends to honor those who protect and serve the community. A Hindu bracelet, called a rakhi, is placed on the wrist of first responders during the ceremony to symbolize the bond. The Naperville Police Department, the Naperville Fire Department, and HSS have participated in this event since 2008 but the ceremony goes back at least 5,000 years.
